Why should I point my toes? I am still working on

Why should I point my toes?

I am still working on having my toes pointed in my handstand practice at all times. I think toe point is a skill being learned through repetition. Some people learned it through other disciplines like dance and have already conditioned their bodies. I used to run hurdles and flexing my feet was a more common movement pattern. Conditioning myself brought me to sharing some of my toe point drills with you.

Why do you point your toes?

This tutorial should give you some inspiration to refine your toe point. Please choose exercises that feel good in your body. Not every drill is for everyone but drills are for everyone ;)

1. Ankle mobility seated to increase the end range of your toe point.

2. Standing toe point exercise: The back foot works on the toe point by pushing the front of the foot into the floor.

3. All kind of leg lifts like forward, external rotations to the side and backwards.

4. Active middle splits on the back: Explore in this lying down position how your legs and your pelvis engagement play out through external and internal rotation as well as pointed or flexed foot position.

5. Kick up into handstand with pointed feet. BUT I also like flexed feet in my straight handstand line to feel the backline of the body more.

6. Feeling the effect of your toe point in different handstand shapes like tuck and pike.

7. Straddle handstand with internal and external leg rotations as well as point and flex.

I think there are many reasons for pointing your toes. But at the end of the day it’s a question of style and aesthetic that you choose for yourself. Many movement disciplines use handstands and not everyone uses the toe point for the final skill.

#toetapchallenge & some #drills to get there.

Toe taps are a great way to work on your core strength to build compression power for your handstand presses. The following exercises are meant to give you a progressive overview for training them 🤸‍♂️

1. Seated spinal pike roles
2. Leg lifts with the roller to be able to lift the top leg but also pull the bottom leg closer to your body
3. Seated nerve glide stretch to increase hamstring flexibility
4. Toe pulls lying on the back with pushing the hands into the wall
5. Forward fold toe lifts with stepping over an “obstacle” like the roller/block and also putting the foot on the roller to drag the leg actively to the body
6. Single leg Toe tap from forward fold without lifting the foot completely
7. Crow to toe tap
8. Butt to wall toe taps - it’s fun and you can use the wall for support to stay up
9. L-shape handstand belly to the wall into the negative toe tap compression
10. Toe tap holds or floats
11. Toe tap to tuck press
12. And for “funsies” the toe tap swings single leg or both legs

I feel the wilderness in my heart. Calling the divine feminine to speak up. Calling my sisters to create the circle of support. Empowerment through action. Holding space for healing the wounds- of today and yesterday. Trying to create a future of equanimity.

I want to ask for space. For a space to be seen and a space of my boundaries being respected. And I am asking for space to feel them no matter how long the answer takes.

Expression means the inside comes out. Taking action is part of an empowered life.

Change comes through practice. The learning through experience. Not only the concept and theories. I often find myself understanding mentally what’s going on but emotionally I am still in my trauma space. So I need experiences that allow me to trust a new built reality. And to heal the wounds of my heart.

Dear sisters, it is ok to learn to ask for what we want. In that vulnerable space we step away from abusive behaviours. Speaking our honest truth enables us to have our real needs met.

Satisfy your wild heart.

Many of you asked why this #middlesplitchallenge is useful in handstands. That’s why I would like to share my #middlesplittraining with you.

💥 Please listen to your own body. There is no need to push through any pain. Progress comes over time and with dedication to the practice.

The following exercises are meant as inspiration:

1. Slides into swim through: The activation of dragging the legs on the floor combined with sliding out into your middle splits. CAREFUL you should only slide as deep as your practice allows you right now.
2. Seated straddle to pancake stretch and pulling the legs together into a seated pike
3. Goddess pulses : activating the outer hip stability
4. Half middle splits with a roller to go in and out between activation and flexibility. Make sure the pelvis and rips are engaged to avoid dumping the weight into the lower back.
5. Standing half middle split into a weird forward fold if you like. Really didn’t know how to call this move or transition haha.
6. Straddle handstand press into hanging straddle stretch or only do the negatives from your straddle handstand
7. Band exercise for your active straddle. Optional play with the range of motion in the legs.
8. Straddle press with band attached aroundyour feet and all the way back down to toe taps.

My teacher @saltandwaterclasses encouraged me to do 10 min every day and I am grateful to feel positive impact of middle splits in my handstand practice. Try it for a month. And share your results ;)

BTW I used to be a runner. All of my flexibility is trained.

I’ve always wanted to do press ups on a counter but unfortunately Berlins kitchens are sparing and simple. I found out that this Mexican counter has the challenge of an overhang at the top so the wall can’t support the feet. So #acro support from @nate.northey it is to make this dream come true. We learned this sequence from @duo_die_acrobatics at @leapacrobatics last year. And to be honest I was terrible at tempos and terrified of slide downs. @nate.northey and I did many tempo calibrations on the ground and I still ask if slide downs hurt especially when they feel more like crash downs.
Along the road of daily practice I forget to see my own improvements. Being scared often times means that I have no idea and that breaking it down into more simple things support my journey.

1. Mobility and balance: root your standing leg and try to do a few forward folds by keeping your knee close to the ribcage to work on your active compression

2. Higher surface: to get the right motion in your body use a higher surface like a chair to press sideways into your straddle handstand

3. Frog to puppy: start in a frog handstand position and keep the control in your handstand when you are initiating the beginning of a reverse puppy press.

4. Double stag to reverse puppy press and puppy press jump: use your double stag handstand balance to transition into your reverse puppy press and if it feels good link it with a mini jump from puppy press position back to your double stag.

5. Puppy Press to Straddle: make sure your hips are leading the motion

6. Half Frog and half middle split flexibility: especially if you find middle splits to challenging this variation will help increase your hip flexibility

7. Never forget to have fun playing #upsidedown

The beauty of going through a process in a dedicated time frame is that you can observe every part of the journey.

Training is a very progressive and process oriented space for me. There are training sessions that feel more challenging than others and moments where I keep falling out of my handstand. But if I look at the bigger picture in a specific time frame I am growing and progressing.

I want to create the space for your to feel the beauty of your own handstand journey. And how sustainable it is to train process oriented rather than goal oriented.

Backstory of this picture: as soon as the waves splashed us I totally freaked out because my focus point was moving water. Everything else was fine. I was just super disoriented.

In our practice we focus a lot on how things feel and how we can make them feel safe for each other. In situations like this I know I can trust the fall out as well as the feeling of this trick outside the visual focus point.

What makes me the happiest when I am teaching?

Shifting perspective. Seeing my students smile. And mostly unraveling the potential after letting go of the rigid limitations in the mind.

It’s fascinating to me how movement, especially #handstands change the way we look at things if we are open to listen to our own wisdom along this journey.
